abel Abel Ranks As The Fan Favorite Street Fighter IV Character At Comic Con
Patrick Klepek over at MTV Multiplayer posted some comments by Capcom’s producer on Street Fighter IV, Yoshinori Ono stating his surprise at the choices gamers were making while playing SF IV at Comic-Con. Of the four new characters Abel was the hands down favorite. “With all due to respect to him, he’s a great character, but honestly we thought Crimson Viper would be a big hit here,” said Ono. “We got a lot of marketing data and a lot of advice from our US branch in creating that character. She was kind of custom tailored for the States and we thought people would like her.” In other words, Capcom figured a female character with a massive rack would test well. And they’re right, she probably does.

But the Abel character capitalizes on something a little more relevant to fighting, the current American obsession with MMA. San Diego itself is a relative hot bed for MMA fighters and having a SEAL team based out of nearby Coronado probably helps to up the kill-people-with-your-hands envy of the locals. Ono said that Capcom would try to figure out why gamers naturally gravitated to the Abel character. But it’s pretty obvious that a nation of would-be cage fighters just want to try to get closer to the real thing than just buying another Affliction t-shirt. If Capcom really wants to use some feedback they’ll add some submissions to Abel’s move list in future games.

  2. Talk about missing the mark. Where did Crimson Viper rank then among the new characters?
