Army Turns To Video Games (Again) To Lure Recruits
June 16, 2008
This August the Army will roll out a new recruitment center aimed at convincing America’s youth that signing up is a ticket to Awesometown. The Army’s chief marketing officer, Edward Walters, told Brandweek that the new centers would take a page from the Apple Stores and the ESPN Zone. We don’t know what’s harder to believe, that the military finds inspiration for luring recruits at an Apple Store or that the Army has a chief marketing officer.
The new recruitment center will feature simulators for flying an Apache attack helicopter, a Black Hawk chopper complete with stations for door gunners and a High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle (which clearly got fucked when the Army was handing out nicknames). Uncle Sam will also host stations for visitors to play America’s Army, a game release back in 2002 based on an existing Army simulator. The center will open in August, exactly where is at this point unknown. But if the Army sees and uptick in recruits, you won’t have to wonder. An army recruitment center will be coming to a city near you.
