Midway had to play by some new rules when it comes to their trademark fatalities in the upcoming Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe. Instead of the normal bloodbath, Midway had to tone down the fatalities to ensure a T-rating, a price they had to pay for the use of the DC Comics characters in the game. In some cases such as Batman, Superman and any other “moral” DC characters, Midway had to drop the fatality altogether and cook up some non-fatal “brutalities.”

Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe got an official November 16 release date from Midway. Despite what gamers have to say about the final roster of characters, it’s a solid line up. It is a shame that DC had to rein in the development team when it came to the “fatalities/brutalities” of their comic good guys. But, according to producer Hector Sanchez, Midway will get more leeway when it comes to the violence quotient on a sequel if MKvsDC moves enough units. Hit the jump to check out the game’s cinematic trailer. Read the rest of this entry »

Blame Batman’s Watered Down Brutality On DC Comics

mortalkombat_vs_dc_universe_batman Blame Batmans Watered Down Brutality On DC Comics
Hector Sanchez, associate producer on Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, sat down to talk about the upcoming release in the MK franchise. According to Ramirez the game is about 85% complete with most of the trademark fatalities and brutalities (finishing moves for the comic book characters that DC didn’t want to mix with simulated murder) set in stone.

As a fan of the post-Frank Miller, just right of evil Batman, I was excited to see what Midway had cooked up for the Dark Knight’s finishing move. I figured Bruce Wayne’s cloudy moral compass over the last couple of years in pop culture would open up plenty of options when it comes to putting an opponent out of their misery. Instead, of cracking a necks, curb stomping, or any physical contact whatsoever, Batman finishes his opponents by slipping a sonic emitter around his wobbling foe that summons a swarm of twenty or thirty squeaking bats. A crippling move, this ain’t. According to Sanchez it was all part of the challenge of working on the a title that includes licensed characters. And it could prove to be a major sticking points with the hardcore fans of the series. Hit the jump to see what Sanchez had to say and why, if anything, pulling the reins in on the MK team might be a good thing. Read the rest of this entry »

Midway’s Hector Sanchez Talks Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

July 22, 2008

hector-sanchez Midways Hector Sanchez Talks Mortal Kombat vs DC UniverseAssociate producer Hector Sanchez fanned on his first shot at pulling off a Fatality with Scorpion during the demo for Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. At least he didn’t have to face the abuse from the rest of the team back at Midway Chicago. “John Edwards, one of the game developers, failed to get a Fatality during a spot for X-play. The entire team saw it live streaming and called him up afterwards. Everyone was like, ‘What the hell man!’ Total failure.”

Unlike the aborted Fatalities, the latest MK in the franchise looks like a success in a lot of different areas. For one thing, Midway has taken it back to the game’s old-school 2-D roots. “Ed Boon (the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise) really listens to the fan base. He just wanted to do it. When we announced the next MK game he said it’s back to basics, we’re going to get gritty, back to what made Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat.” Read the rest of this entry »
