Last year’s Harmonix-developed Rock Band stole the spotlight from Guitar Hero (though not in terms of sales) as the unofficial sequel to the GH series. With drums, a mic, and pretty awesome team play—as long as your apartment floor plan accommodated an arsenal of plastic instruments in the middle of your living room—what wasn’t to like?

EA/MTV Games’ follow-up recognizes that they had a hit the first time, because the gameplay really isn’t that much different. The new catalogue of over 100 songs—80-plus of which are on the disc, twenty being free downloads—make this worth the price just for the cost-per-song. And that’s without even getting into the added features. As a bonus, the sequel works with your old plastic instruments, so the cost won’t kill you. However, if you do feel like dropping the big cash bomb, some swank wireless guitars and drums are there for the purchasing. Other than a new guitar paint job, softer drum pads, a metal drum pedal, and no wires to snake across the room, you can still rock out without paying for the upgrade. Though the guys behind the Ion Drum Rocker admit that their kit could result in sex with a woman if you’re willing to fork over $300 for the kit and enough time to actually learn the drums.

Importing your old songs from Rock Band only costs five bucks. During a preview of the game the developers intimated that Rock Band 2 was subsidizing the cost of re-licensing the tunes. It appears that Rock Band has your back. And the downloadable song library is gigantic. Five hundred songs will be available by year’s end, but that also means you’ll end up potentially downing hundreds of dollars in micro-purchases into Rock Band’s gaping, rhythmic, fun hole. Don’t worry, that’s a technical term.
