Ubisoft only showed off a teaser trailer for Jade Raymond’s new project, I Am Alive. The only concrete information states that Chicago gets jacked up by an unknown source and, judging by the trailer, water has become pretty hard to come by. But a sign tucked away in the trailer at least hints at the source of destruction.

During a flashback segment in the trailer showing Chicago a few seconds before it gets the boondini, you can spot an ad with the address www.ruaumoko.com hanging off a train track. (It was a little easier to spot than the Gears ASCII nugget). According to Wikipedia, Ruaumoko is a Maori god whose movements below the earth’s surface resulted in earthquakes and volcanoes spewing lava. If you’re not familiar, the Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand most well known for their tradition of facial tattoos and stomping the guts out of British colonialists back in the day. The New Zealand government recently ran a national disaster readiness test called Exercise Ruaumoko to drill the people of Auckland on what to do (other than kiss their asses goodbye) in the event of a catastrophic volcano eruption.

Type in the URL and it redirects you to the official homepage of the game. So now we know a survival adventure game using a disaster as a backdrop somehow involves earthquakes…or maybe someone at Ubi is just a bigtime All Blacks fan. Either way, everyone’s doing the haka when I Am Alive hits shelves in Spring 2009. More info as it develops.
