New York Times Reports Al Qaeda Using Sega Carts As Bomb Detonators

The New York Times has a front page article today discussing the fate of the Guantanamo Bay detention center. Both Barack Obama and John McCain have pledged to shut down Uncle Sam’s little Cuban resort for illegal combatants. The question is, what do you do with the guests? The article details a few resume points for the current detainees. The highlights include training in assassination techniques (including poisons), the use of disguises and one trainee allegedly schooled in making bomb detonators out of old SEGA cartridges.
The Sega mention is brief as you can see in the excerpt from the article by William Glaberson and Margot Williams
“Others still at the much-criticized detention camp there include prisoners who the government says were trained in assassination and the use of poisons and disguises.
One detainee is said to have been schooled in making detonators out of Sega game cartridges. A Yemeni who has received little public attention was originally selected by Mr. bin Laden as a potential Sept. 11 hijacker, intelligence officials say.”
I’ve got absolutely no idea what an old 8-bit 16-bit (correction courtesy of Ben Heckendorn) cartridge has to do with setting off an explosive device or what would make a Sega cart better than an Atari or Nintendo cartridge. But it sounds like some high-test MacGyvering, and also the most depressing case mod in history. The fact that the only other reference I can find regarding explosives, terrorists and Sega carts is a Wiki entry for Hassan bin ‘Attash casts some doubt on the claim. Hopefully the NYT has shored up their factchecking since the Jayson Blair days. Anyone got Ben Heck’s number for a quick confirm?

I think thats pretty smart…, not supporting terrorism or anything, but turning games of childhood into games of death is creepy and decesive
