Das Gamer Talks Gears of War 2 With Lester Speight, Voice Of Augustus Cole

November 06, 2008

You probably don’t know the name Lester Speight. But if you played Gears of War, you can’t forget the voice. Speight, who also goes by the Mighty Rasta, showed up on the pop culture radar when he starred in Reebok’s Super Bowl ads as Terrible Terry Tate, Office Linebacker. Speight credits the ad spots for his role as the voice of Augustus Cole in Gears of War and Gears of War 2. But Speight deserves a little bit more than that from every Gearhead out there. According to Epic design directorCliff Bleszinski, the concept for the Gears of War spawned from watching Terry Tate scream, “Here comes the Pain Train!” before dropping the hammer on a co-worker. “We were sitting in the office watching those videos and just thought,” says Bleszinski, “I want to go to war with that guy.” Check the un-censored full Terry Tate video posted after the jump for your viewing pleasure.

Gears Of War 2 Makes A Cameo Appearance In Entourage

October 27, 2008

During last night’s episode of Entourage an extra walked into the frame behind and to the left of Kevin Connolly (Eric Murphy) and Kevin Dillon (Johnny Drama) wearing a Gears of War T-shirt (hit the jump to view the larger pic). With the extra walking in and out of the picture in two seconds, the shirt doesn’t get as much screen time as the average Budweiser bottle gets per episode. But, given the coming release date and Microsoft’s influencer program that put out the limited edition GTA IV Xbox and threw a party for Gears of War 2 at Mr. Cartoon’s LA tattoo shop, it’s likely that the t-shirt was a paid placement.

Rumor Hammer: Twitter Cliff Bleszinski Pic Confirmed As (Bad) Fake

October 13, 2008

cliff_bleszinski Rumor Hammer: Twitter Cliff Bleszinski Pic Confirmed As (Bad) Fake Epic PR manager Dana Cowley confirmed the pic of a bare-chested Cliff Bleszinski (after the jump) and the associated Twitter account that posted the shot as fakes. “It’s not Cliff. He’s in Australia on press tour,” said Cowley, “The posts alone about ’showing Mark the ad,’ it’s obviously a fake. We think that people will figure it out soon enough.”

Whoever is behind the farce should be ashamed. The production value on this thing sucks. Using “Cliffy B” in the watermark instead of his full name, the lack of the skull logo, the fact that the necklace the guy is wearing isn’t official Gears of War 2 merch? Goddammit people, if there’s one thing Bleszinski knows, it’s proper branding. It wouldn’t be such a reach that he’d pull some outlandish stunts to promote the game. But you have to think of the little details when you perpetrate proper fraud. I will say, whoever is behind the Twitter page should be proud of the entry “Marinated a steak in Red Bull for dinner. I made this steak bigger, better and more badass.” Read the rest of this entry »

October 10, 2008

cliff_bleszinski_gearsofwar2 Cliff Bleszinski On Gears 2, Re-Enacting The Miller Lite Catfight With Ted Price
Gears of War 2 is finished and ready for its November 7th debut on Xbox 360. To help fuel the ramp up Microsoft hosted an exclusive San Francisco event for journalists to play through every portion of the game, including the new campaign. Cliff Bleszinski, lead game designer at Epic Games, walked around the Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf ballroom as 30-plus HD TVs broadcast his latest creation. In between watching game journalists blast their way through (and underneath) Sera, he took some time to talk about Gears of War 2, why some gamers expect him to go nipple to nipple with Ted Price in a fountain, and his thoughts on David Jaffe. As usual, Bleszinski had plenty to say. Check out the full interview after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Gears of War 2 Video Gives Some Background On The New Locust Bad Guys

October 02, 2008

gearsofwar2_scourge Gears of War 2 Video Gives Some Background On The New Locust Bad Guys
A few weeks back Epic released a video that teased a very Predator-esque enemy coming up in Gears of War 2. The latest trailer on the game gives gamers a clearer look and a name, the Scourge. According to design director Cliff Bleszinski, this particular Locust wields a burst pistol and, of course, a double-ended chainsaw staff. While the Scourge represents the new “oh shit” opposition. Bleszinski still has a place in his heart for the kamikaze critters known as tickers. Hit the jump to watch the video and watch the full rundown on Locust enemies and hear the obligatory use of the phrase “bad ass.” Read the rest of this entry »
