Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) knows a thing or two about massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, having created EverCrack and its sequel. Now SOE is on a mission to bring MMOs to the masses with new experiences like the espionage shooter The Agency and the world’s first licensed superhero MMO, DC Universe Online. Chris Cao, studio creative director for DC Universe Online, which is being developed at SOE’s Austin Studio, took some time during the San Diego Comic-Con to talk about the various DC characters you’ll come across from Supes to good old Ambush Bug. Ever since word got out about Sony Online’s upcoming MMO DC Universe Online—which features all of the DC characters in their native environments—the ‘net has been buzzing with anticipation. Information about the game was painfully scarce, until the fanboy set discovered some ads in the last week’s DC comic releases that pointed them to the game’s secret Myspace.

And what did they find on the site? Well, besides some cool wallpapers and info about an exclusive party at Comic-Con, the page had the first available screenshots of the game. Jackpot, right? Right. Except for the fact that they’re crazy small, as you can see above. But, these should do until E3 or until the game debuts at the San Diego Comic-Con later this month. After the jump, check out a video of concept art from the game.

You Won’t Get A Pair Of Licensed Tights In DC Universe Online

June 27, 2008

dcuni2 You Wont Get A Pair Of Licensed Tights In DC Universe Online
DC Universe Online for the PC and PS3 will hit shelves sometime in 2009. But players will not get a chance to assume the role of Batman, Green Lantern or even the lowly Aquaman. Which really kind of seems like bullshit. The game is going to be a cross between an action title and an MMO. Why not have multiple Superman’s flying around? You will get to design your own superhero, pick out some abilities from a buffet of powers and choose between good and evil. DC characters will appear in the game but only as NPCs. If it’s a dealbreaker, or you already left City of Heroes behind, stick with Worlds Collide.
