Games Critics Announce E3 2008 Winners

mutanttwins_fallout3 Games Critics Announce E3 2008 Winners
The judges behind the Games Critics Awards, a panel of more than 30 video game journalists headed up by Geoff Keighley and Rob Smith, have weighed in on their ballots. Bethesda’s Fallout 3 took top honors as best in show. EA walked away with five wins, the most of any publisher, and provides a nice symmetry to spending the most money of any company at the conference. In the PvPvP arena, Microsoft led with eight wins compared to seven trophies for Sony and one award for the Wii. While there was plenty of hype around the “heated” controversy on whether or not the Critics could include Activision on the ballots, why didn’t anyone at the GCA even mention Gamecock? Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski Talks Gears of War 2 At E3 2008

July 31, 2008

gearsofwar2_mrcartoon10 Epics Cliff Bleszinski Talks Gears of War 2 At E3 2008
During E3 Microsoft hosted a small event at The Last Laugh, a tattoo shop and retail space run by LA-based tattoo artist Mr. Cartoon and street photographer Estevan Oriol, to show off Gears of War 2 and Madden 09 in a more intimate setting. And by intimate setting I mean they had free drinks, freshly made tacos and a lot of killer art. Around the shop Mr. Cartoon had his oil paintings, limited edition sneakers, vinyl figures and even a pair of air brushed tricycles that would set you back nearly three grand a piece all on display. Inside guests got to throw back free drinks and got a chance to talk to Gears of War 2 designer Cliff Bleszinski, Mr. Cartoon, Oriol, actor (and voice of Gears character Augustus Cole) Lester Speight, the Konsole Kingz, hip hop artist Murs and Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg.

I got a chance to catch up with Bleszinski to talk about what he has left to work on before shipping Gears 2, “stepping on other people’s skulls,” and the current state of E3 as a post-apocalyptic ghost town. Hit the jump to watch the video and check out a gallery of photos from the event. Read the rest of this entry »

fatprincess_feedingtime Rant Against Fat Princess Fails To Mention The Name Princess Muffintop
Blogger Melissa McEwan has pointed her stinkfinger firmly in the direction of Sony after catching a whiff of the upcoming PSN title Fat Princess. She fails to mention any umbrage taken at the name of the main character, Princess Muffintop but hey, who can expect to do a little research in the rush to register bile on the Internets? Resident Evil 5’s Jun Takeuchi: Go To The Knife And You’re Screwed

Stephen Totilo over at MTV Multiplayer snagged an interview with Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi at E3. Capcom had a playable version on display in their booth. I was a little more partial to the Street Fighter IV arcade units but the RE franchise definitely deserves its due respect. Among the RE revelations, Capcom revealed the co-op game mechanic between main character Chris Redfield and new female character, Sheva Alomar. In his interview Takeuchi talks combat (if you have to resort to Redfield’s knife it’s pretty much over), co-op, chainsaws and more.

Andrew Wafer, brand manager at Codemasters, and Clive Lindop, lead AI designer, were on hand at E3 to demo their new tactical shooter Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising at E3. One of Lindop’s comments sum up the experience of watching the trailer, “We wanted to portray warfare from the ground up and capture the sheer scale of modern ordinance.” In other words, you’re going to blow shit up. Wafer showed off models of vehicles before and after a missile strike to demonstrate the progressive deformation of objects. Also, when a vehicle goes down it won’t simply disappear. “When you blow stuff up,” said Wafer, “It stays blown up.” Read the rest of this entry »
