Das Gamer Gets Some Hands On Time With Mirror’s Edge

August 08, 2008

mirrors_edge01 Das Gamer Gets Some Hands On Time With Mirror’s Edge

When you think DICE, you think Battlefield, an award eating warfare based shooter franchise for the PC. DICE has recently seen some success with their latest console venture (and some would say first successful console title) Battlefield: Bad Company. Sure, blasting away at soldiers and vehicular mayhem seems to be almost second nature to DICE, but what about Parkour? Really? An odd concept on paper has seemingly turned into one of the most exciting titles I got my hands on at E3. Even though there is combat, just as in the art of Parkour, the main goal of Mirror’s Edge is to get from point A to point B in the safest and most efficient way possible. Will Wright Dusts Off Old Comments Comparing The Sims To Herpes

August 07, 2008

will_wright_spore Will Wright Dusts Off Old Comments Comparing The Sims To HerpesBefore taking the stage for his first-ever Comic-Con International keynote address, Spore creator Will Wright sat down to talk about video games. It had been a fairly long week for Wright, coming off E3 and delivering a presentation that compared the users of the Spore Creature Editor to 38% God, discussed his partnership with SETI and accused the chemistry sets of today for being too nerf. Out of context these kinds of elements sound more like a Dr. Evil monologue than one of the brighter minds in games business today.

Check out what the man behind SimCity and The Sims had to say about the popularity of his 100 million unit-selling franchise and his hopes for appeasing the hardcore crowd with his upcoming September 7 release, Spore, after the jump.

Brett Favre Trade Turns New Madden Cover Into Collector’s Item

August 07, 2008

jetbrett_hat Brett Favre Trade Turns New Madden Cover Into Collectors Item
Brett Favre’s new Madden 09 cover isn’t exactly going to match up with his new Jets jersey. Last night Favre signed on to the Jets roster and at least two chances to face off against the Patriots. IGN has reported that EA won’t try to bust out new covers for Madden 09 which hits shelves on Monday. And there’s no reason they should try. The cover disparity will only add to the publicity bonfire EA has gotten out of the Brett Favre soap opera and it means they have already printed a couple million collector’s items. Das Gamer a Favre comeback based on an interview he did with GameTap back in May. OK, it wasn’t so much a prediction as a “maybe.” So I’ll have to go ahead and make an actual prognostication. When Favre gets folded in half by Vince Wilfork and Richard Seymour and (sadly) ends his career it will prove that Ray Lewis and Shaun Alexander were wrong about the Madden Curse.

gemma_lead Gemma Atkinson Brings Her Talents (Both Of Them) To C&C 3: Red Alert
EA is going international with their cast for cutscenes in Command & Conquer 3: Red Alert. Brit soap opera starlet Gemma Atkinson will bring her acting talents and a striking ability to fill out lingerie to the RTS strategy game due out this October. She’ll play the role of Lt. Eva McKenna on the Allied side of the fence opposite of Gina Carano’s Natasha Volkova. You might recognize Carano from her stint on American Gladiators as “Crush” or pummeling women into submission on CBS. Message to John Riccitello: This is your chance to set the bar for exclusive downloadable content. Check out the Gemma gallery after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Matt Ryan Talks About His NCAA Football 09 Cover, Shows Off Game Face

July 14, 2008

EA Sports NCAA Football 09 hits shelves tomorrow with former Boston College QB and current Atlanta Falcon Matt Ryan sitting on the cover of the PS3 version. See what Ryan has to say about the game in this video from EA’s NFL Draft Weekend Event at Marquee in New York City. Unfortunately the flick pre-dates the current Brett Favre-gate brouhaha (which raises a few questions around the denial of the Madden Curse’s existence). Don’t miss our previous interviews with Chris «I don’t have a gut» Long, Vernon Gholston, overall number one NFL Draft pick Jake Long and Owen «the runaway beer truck» Schmitt. Each player gave us a preview of the “game face” they plan on throwing the cameras for their first intro on Monday Night Football. These guys need to work on their Blue Steel. See for yourself after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

EA Rolls The Dice On Mirror’s Edge

July 11, 2008

crane_web_tif_jpgcopy EA Rolls The Dice On Mirror’s Edge
EA-owned Digital Illusions (DICE) knows a thing or two about shooters. They’ve sold millions of copies of its Battlefield games over the years, including their most recent, Battlefield: Bad Company. Their next title, Mirror’s Edge, a first-person shooter, takes two bold chances. For one thing, it’s original intellectual property. And second, the game allows players to take guns completely out of the equation. Tom Farrer, producer of Mirror’s Edge, said that while a lot of other games have touched upon first-person action, including Thief and Breakdown, no one has ever followed through for a complete game experience. By combining elements of first person shooters and third person action, the developers place as much emphasis on what the main character, Faith, does with a gun in her hand as what she does without. Spore Shows Off New Screens, Hints At Sacrifice Of Meat To Wooden Gods

June 02, 2008

sporeapp_lead-2 Spore Shows Off New Screens, Hints At Sacrifice Of Meat To Wooden Gods
EA released some new screens of Will Wright’s long awaited magnum opus of all Sims. The accompanying press release doesn’t mention anything about offering up sacrifices to wooden totems with cuts of raw meat as the above pic suggests. But it does point out gameplay details like hunting and gathering, animal husbandry, and primitive warfare on creatures that don’t look like your creatures. In other words, fuck Gandhi in the earhole. The game ain’t called Pacifism. More screens after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Dead Space Producer Glen Schofield Wants “To Scare The Piss Out Of You”

May 29, 2008

deadspace1 Dead Space Producer Glen Schofield Wants “To Scare The Piss Out Of You”
By now you’ve heard of EA’s play into the horror-survival genre–the one that doesn’t involve a hostile takeover bid of Take-Two. We’re talking about their upcoming title, Dead Space. Players will assume the role of Isaac Clarke, a space mechanic sent to a distant solar system to find a mining ship, the USG Ishimura, that’s gone missing. As we have already noted, space travel generally ends very poorly unless you’re William Shatner.

The guys at EA Los Angles, executive producer Glen Schofield in particular, have made effort to scare the shit out of you. We caught up with Schofield to talk about putting the fear into gamers, “strategic dismemberment” and his own neuroses. Hit the jump for the interview.
