After working out the launch kinks, Apple fans can now gorge themselves on the iPhone App Store and its buffet of software: some free, some cheap , and all of it a mystery. Among the 500 downloads you can make on your iPhone (be it 3G or plain ol’ last year’s goods) are a monstrous number of launch games such as Super Monkey Ball. As a portable game device, the iPhone could be the best thing to happen since the original Game Boy. Let’s see if any of these Day One games make the DS and PSP sweat their pants just yet. Reports are trickling in of iPhones getting bricked by failed firmware updates and the subsequent crash of Apple’s servers. Despite the hiccups (I guess rendering the intended hardware useless makes hiccup a bit of an understatement), Steve Jobs’ crew has something to crow about with the reported 160+ games they have waiting in the wings. As long as no one who bought the iPhone for $500 last year can get over the precipitous price drop. And everyone can leg go of their initial anger of getting placed on hold for a couple hours waiting for tech support. Yep, once they get those old servers up they’ll uh, they’ll sure have something to crow about in Cupertino. Um, ka-kaw? Stay tuned for our next installment of Games Without Boxes and we’ll take some promising titles for a test drive. The ones we can find anyway.
