Aeropause’s Political LittleBigPlanet Election Video Comes In Two Flavors

November 05, 2008

aeropause Aeropauses Political LittleBigPlanet Election Video Comes In Two FlavorsRichard Windsor over at Aeropause put together a LittleBigPlanet level featuring senator John McCain and president elect Barack Obama. Windsor devised a mechanic that lets gamers choose the candidate they want to win and, well, you’ll see what happens. The funny thing is that the video comes in two versions. Flavor one shows a well-framed shot of the TV screen with no commentary. And then there’s flavor two, which is more of a camera-parked-off to-the-side-Jesus-there-are-only-two-beers-left-in-the-case-git-on-the-straight-talk-express kind of thing going on.

LittleBigPlanet Producer Eric Fong Takes A Shot At Defining Sackboy

October 28, 2008

littlebigplanet_sackboys_2 LittleBigPlanet Producer Eric Fong Takes A Shot At Defining Sackboy
According to developer Media Molecule, you can make of PlayStation 3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet what you will. It’s a pop-up storybook-style platform-hopper. It’s a freeform level design suite. It’s a chance to stage your own recreation of the infamous 9/11 attacks. There’s no denying Sackboy’s ability as an equal opportunity offender. The title characters’ name alone conjures memories of a college buddy who knew only one party trick that involved “hanging brain” and never really ended all that well.

With LBP’s potential to be so many things to so many people, it’s difficult to define it in an intro paragraph. Which is why I decided to pass the buck to producer Eric Fong, and let him to distill LittleBigPlanet down to its most compelling elements. Turns out, he can’t do it either. Hit the jump to see how Fong defines LBP, knowing that the longevity of LBP could be bad for business and possibly offending the gaming world before gamers ever opened the box.

Over the course of the last nine months the little burlap being known as Sackboy, the main character in LittleBigPlanet, has turned into the unofficial mascot for Sony’s PS3. After a slight derailment in production, LBP hits stores this week. Gamers can play through LBP’s campaign but the real entertainment comes by way of building custom levels from scratch with every tool the developers used to create the game at your disposal. Anyone who ever pissed on a game design now has a chance to build and share their own work. Got the sack to put your ideas out there for the fanboys to flame on?

LittleBigPlanet Gets Kakuto Chojin-ed

October 17, 2008

littlebigkautochojin LittleBigPlanet Gets Kakuto Chojin-ed
Media Molecule and Sony discovered an 11th-hour misstep lurking in the background of LittleBigPlanet. Turns out that one of the licensed songs in the game’s soundtrack contains a lyric that uses passages from the Qu’ran. In an effort to run damage control, Sony are re-pressing all the discs, recalling all the outbound product and pushing the release date back to October 27th. The blunder is reminiscent of the ordeal that Microsoft went through in 2003 when it was discovered that the fighting game, Kakuto Chojin: Back Alley Brutal (Sackboy’s noggin is mounted on Kakuto’s coverboy Asad), used verses from the Qu’ran in one of its tracks. Only the Xbox title actually made it to shelves.

LittleBigPlanet Beta Key Spawns First LittleBigPlanet Of Terror Level

October 07, 2008

lbp_terror_sackboy LittleBigPlanet Beta Key Spawns First LittleBigPlanet Of Terror Level
It only took two weeks following the release of the LittleBigPlanet beta keys for someone to create a level based on the 9/11 attack on the twin towers as well as suicide truck bombing complete with cries to “Allah.” The truck bombing level also includes a line of speech from SackBoy that reads, “Dallas is next,” which on the surface seems to invoke the Oklahoma City bombing. Which, if true, only serves as a further indictment to the inherent dumbassery of the whole thing. This kind of shit had to be expected by Sony and Media Molecule. The only real surprise is that the first LBP level to raise a flag doesn’t somehow involve hardcore porn or necrophilia. The real question here is how will Sony deal with this kind of content? Will they turn a blind eye and cite free speech, let the community police itself or just drop the ban hammer? See the video after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
