European Mortal Kombat Fans Get Something To Smile About

Midway had to play by some new rules when it comes to their trademark fatalities in the upcoming Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe. Instead of the normal bloodbath, Midway had to tone down the fatalities to ensure a T-rating, a price they had to pay for the use of the DC Comics characters in the game. In some cases such as Batman, Superman and any other “moral” DC characters, Midway had to drop the fatality altogether and cook up some non-fatal “brutalities.”

mk-chris-on-chris New Mortal Kombat Trailer Shows Off Some Chris Vs. Chris Action
The latest trailer from Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe shows off Rayden going toe-to-toe with Superman. It actually kicks off with Batman versus Sub-Zero but “Christian Bale vs Francois Petit action” (Sub-Zero in 1995’s Mortal Kombat) just doesn’t sound like headline material. Blitz II Producer Jacob Beucler: “Caliendo Is A Beast”

October 21, 2008

jacob_beucler_blitzii_part2 Blitz II Producer Jacob Beucler: Caliendo Is A BeastOdds are that up to now no one has ever described comedian Frank Caliendo as “a beast.” But in this second and final interview segment with Blitz The League II producer Jacob Beucler covering the celebrity talent behind Blitz II the phrase gets tossed into the mix. While Lawrence Taylor gets top billing, comedians Jay Mohr and Caliendo lent their voices to characters in the game. Peter Eagan, the writer behind ESPN’s controversial Playmakers series, handled the script. Then there’s the nameless crew crew of stunt men that spent a week knocking each other into oblivion so the victims writhe in pain in exactly the right way on screen.

Hit the jump to read what Beucler had to say about dodging an Adult Only rating, getting Caliendo to use his John Madden voice to stick it to EA and stunt men losing all sensation in their feet. Read the rest of this entry »

Dress Up And Fight Like Shazam On November 16

Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe got an official November 16 release date from Midway. Despite what gamers have to say about the final roster of characters, it’s a solid line up. It is a shame that DC had to rein in the development team when it came to the “fatalities/brutalities” of their comic good guys. But, according to producer Hector Sanchez, Midway will get more leeway when it comes to the violence quotient on a sequel if MKvsDC moves enough units. Midway’s Jacob Beucler On The Harsh Reality Of Blitz The League II

October 08, 2008

jacob_beucler_midway_blitz2 Midways Jacob Beucler On The Harsh Reality Of Blitz The League II It will be a shame if Blitz: The League II doesn’t get the respect it deserves. The late hits, ménage a trois cut scenes and mini games that revolve around injecting players with painkillers could blind gamers and critics to the fact that Blitz is as fair a representation of the NFL as Madden. The shock of watching virtual vertebrae explode following a three-man collision could very well make gamers overlook the level of work and detail that went in to making those bones look so real as they splinter. But anyone who calls the violence in Blitz over the top needs to watch Arizona Cardinal Anquan Boldin get his sinuses caved in courtesy of Jets defensive backs Eric Smith and Kerry Rhodes.

Everything from the violence to the off-field depravity never strays too far from the truth. “This is hardcore football,” says senior associate producer Jacob Beucler, “We don’t feel like it’s lowest common denominator. We’re bringing it back. We’re showing this is how shit can roll when you’re playing with the big boys.” On top of it all, the game looks fun as hell to play. Hit the jump and let Beucler shed some light on everything from Midway execs clamoring to keep in references to the Dirty Sanchez to the level of effort that went into to making the clavicles shatter like it’s Sunday. Midway Releases Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe Box Art And New Screens

October 03, 2008

mortalkombat_vs_dcuniverse05 Midway Releases Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe Box Art And New Screens
Midway has pumped out a few new looks at their upcoming fighter, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. MK associate producer Hector Sanchez already pointed out a few of the challenges of working with licensed characters in his interview with Das Gamer. As evidenced by Batman’s less-than-brutal brutality, the crew at Midway had to make some concessions. All of my hands on experience with the title point to a solid fighter, definitely worth the money. Hit the jump to see the official box art, more screens of Superman against Raiden and Baraka and the Flash throwing down. Read the rest of this entry »
