Blame Batman’s Watered Down Brutality On DC Comics

October 01, 2008

mortalkombat_vs_dc_universe_batman Blame Batmans Watered Down Brutality On DC Comics
Hector Sanchez, associate producer on Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, sat down to talk about the upcoming release in the MK franchise. According to Ramirez the game is about 85% complete with most of the trademark fatalities and brutalities (finishing moves for the comic book characters that DC didn’t want to mix with simulated murder) set in stone.

As a fan of the post-Frank Miller, just right of evil Batman, I was excited to see what Midway had cooked up for the Dark Knight’s finishing move. I figured Bruce Wayne’s cloudy moral compass over the last couple of years in pop culture would open up plenty of options when it comes to putting an opponent out of their misery. Instead, of cracking a necks, curb stomping, or any physical contact whatsoever, Batman finishes his opponents by slipping a sonic emitter around his wobbling foe that summons a swarm of twenty or thirty squeaking bats. A crippling move, this ain’t. According to Sanchez it was all part of the challenge of working on the a title that includes licensed characters. And it could prove to be a major sticking points with the hardcore fans of the series. Hit the jump to see what Sanchez had to say and why, if anything, pulling the reins in on the MK team might be a good thing. Read the rest of this entry »

August 20, 2008

aquaman Aquaman Losing Hope For A Slot On The Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe RosterMidway showed off images of DC Comic characters Deathstroke and Wonder Woman as well as Mortal Kombat’s Kano and Raiden during their press conference at Liepzig. Those four additions to the Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe brings the roster up to nine characters for each side. It also puts Aquaman’s chances for making the team squarely in the shitter.

But in the crapper, you do find water. And associate producer Hector Sanchez mentioned 20 to 22 roster spots during E3. There’s still an outside chance at seeing the man in the orange scale shirt pulling off a whale song Fatality. You can buy the a t-shirt with the above illo designed by Jon Kruse on Emptees.com. Midway’s Hector Sanchez Talks Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

July 22, 2008

hector-sanchez Midways Hector Sanchez Talks Mortal Kombat vs DC UniverseAssociate producer Hector Sanchez fanned on his first shot at pulling off a Fatality with Scorpion during the demo for Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. At least he didn’t have to face the abuse from the rest of the team back at Midway Chicago. “John Edwards, one of the game developers, failed to get a Fatality during a spot for X-play. The entire team saw it live streaming and called him up afterwards. Everyone was like, ‘What the hell man!’ Total failure.”

Unlike the aborted Fatalities, the latest MK in the franchise looks like a success in a lot of different areas. For one thing, Midway has taken it back to the game’s old-school 2-D roots. “Ed Boon (the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise) really listens to the fan base. He just wanted to do it. When we announced the next MK game he said it’s back to basics, we’re going to get gritty, back to what made Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat.” Read the rest of this entry »

Midway Revives Non-Licensed Football Franchise With Blitz: The League II

blitzii_06 Midway Revives Non-Licensed Football Franchise With Blitz: The League II
In 2007 Midway slapped Lawrence Taylor and Bill Romanowski on the cover of the original Blitz in generic football uniforms, blood trickling down their faces in the driving rain. The image conveyed several messages. But, “Assaulting a teammate and a arrests for crack cocaine won’t get in the way of your long term earning potential,” and, “Hey NFL, fuck you,” seemed to dominate. Read the rest of this entry »

Midway Confirms Fatalities For Mortal Kombat Worlds Collide

June 24, 2008

batman_render1 Midway Confirms Fatalities For Mortal Kombat Worlds Collide
Before you get your Superman Underoos fully wadded you should know that Midway is only guaranteeing Fatalities for the Mortal Kombat crew and the DC villains that make it into Mortal Kombat Worlds Collide. Heroes known for their high moral fiber won’t have a deadly finishing move, but they will have a non-fatal Brutality. The announcement at least implicitly admits to some DC bad guys making the cut (up till now Batman and Superman have been the only comic characters to make the official roster). But it doesn’t really set a hard line for whether or not Batman will get to finish someone Dark Knight-style. If he gets stuck with a Brutality he could just transform his fallen opponent into a brightly dressed young boy and lead them down into a cave. That’s better than murder, right?

batman_render Midway Releases Batman Render, Aquaman-Watch 2008 Continues
As you can see from the latest render posted up on WorldsCollide.com, the host site for Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. The confirmed character count so far includes the caped crusader, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and, of course, Superman. No news on whether or not Aquaman has made the cut. One can only hope that DC will throw his useless, scaly ass in there and build out a fatality based around whale song. More photos after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
