Das Review: Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway

October 15, 2008

biahh_teamwork Das Review: Brothers In Arms: Hells Highway
While a few years ago it seemed like every publisher was shitting out another WWII title, very few franchises stood the test of time. The Battlefield, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor and the Brothers In Arms franchises all were worth playing. But with the exception of Gearbox’s new Brothers In Arms: Hell’s Highway (and the upcoming Call of Duty: World at War), most of them have either hung up their hats or moved towards modern or future war battles. Odds are you’ve probably killed your fair share of video game Germans in the last 10 years, and are burnt out on this particular subgenre of FPS titles, but before you gloss over Hell’s Highway and think that it’s just another WWII game, there’s a number of reasons why this game deserves some attention. The Force Unleashed, Finally A Star Wars Prequel Worth Watching

September 23, 2008

starwars_force_unleashed05 The Force Unleashed, Finally A Star Wars Prequel Worth Watching
Star Wars video games have always seemed a little too geeky for my taste—and I’m a Star Wars fan. I’ve watched all six movies more times than I can count. I defend The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones for no good reason. But I’m strictly a fan of the canon. The spin-off cartoons and books remind me too much of what I never liked about Star Trek and its endless storylines. The Force Unleashed is really, in a way, Episode III 1/2. Or, it’s the video game version of a movie that was never made. Read the rest of this entry »

Das Review: MLB Power Pros 2008 DS

September 17, 2008

pp2008_ds_fob Das Review: MLB Power Pros 2008 DS
The last time I got to go this deep into something so unbearably cute, it was 1989 and she had frosted bangs. From the start, I couldn’t help but become endeared by MLB Power Pros 2008 as it pops the ubiquitous Wii / Mii heads onto your favorite players and throws you into a series of modes with endlessly customizable player stats. Das Reviews: Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution

August 15, 2008

civilizationrevds Das Reviews: Sid Meiers Civilization RevolutionAfter four hours of drool-inducing play of Sid Meier’s Civilization: Revolution, on the bus back to NYC, even the 5000-year-old mummy sitting next to me was interested in what was happening on the two little screens under my thumbs. “Does it really take over five years for your soldiers to just cross two squares of desert land?” she asked. “Yes,” I told her, “I chose George W. Bush as my leader.” She frowned at me then turned away and continued to rot in her fifteen dollar seat.

Ok, so I was just playing with her. You cannot choose Dubya as your fearless dictator, and unlike American voters he can’t be forced on you either by way of hanging chads and the good people of Florida. But you can choose from such luminaries as Ghengis Khan, Alexander The Great, Mao and more, to lead you to victory in Firaxis and 2K’s successful strategic gem. Read the rest of this entry »

Das Gamer Reviews Guitar Hero: Aerosmith

Make no mistake about it: Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is basically the same game as last year’s Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock. Using the controller you got with that game, or the Aerosmith-themed Gibson you can get in a bundle, you still play along with the colored notes, still eventually get into a showdown with a rock god (this time’s being Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, naturally), and you still can’t play on Expert to save your life. Das Gamer Reviews Don King Presents: Prizefighter

July 03, 2008

dkpp_screen_6 Das Gamer Reviews Don King Presents: Prizefighter
Like most sports, boxing games usually fall into one of two categories: simulations such as the Fight Night series, and silly/arcade-style brawlers, such as PunchOut! But it’s hard to tell who the intended audience for Prizefighter is, since it’s neither realistic enough for boxing fans, nor silly enough for to make it into the arcade genre. While it has real pugilists - both current (Nate Campbell, Samuel Peter, Andre Berto) and classic (Larry Holmes, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson) - and makes them look enough like real people (at least on the 360) that you’ll wince when they get hit particularly hard, the controls are decidedly more of the simple arcade variety, making this play more like a Dead Or Alive-style fighting game (sans the boobs) than a boxing sim. Except that it doesn’t go far enough with the arcade play.

Das Gamer Reviews Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots

It’s the game PS3 owners, and Metal Gear Solid fans, have waited far too long for. But if any game was worth this wait, it’s this one. Like every M.G.S. before it, Patriots is a serious evolution, one that pushes the concept of stealth action (and gaming in general) into new, inventive areas, while also resetting the bar for gorgeous graphics.
