NCSoft’s Richard Garriott On Klingon: Epic Fail

August 15, 2008

klingonknife NCSofts Richard Garriott On Klingon: Epic FailRichard Garriott, aka Lord British and the guy who wants to drag human DNA into space, had a few things to say about correctly implementing a foreign language into a game. He created the language “Gargish” for use in Ultima as a way for players to have a deeper interactive experience with the game (should they try to piece together Gargish). In this story Garriott outlines the rules to creating new lingo and, in the process, takes a dump on Klingon saying, “When you create an alternate language, it can’t be too complex or it might as well be gibberish.” Sounds like someone at the Klingon Language Institute is going to be pissed.

If someone ever walks up to you and starts belting out Klingon you should know what to do. Knock their party-sized bag of Doritos out of their hands. They will immediately look down and possibly emit a shrill noise–don’t let this distract you. Immediately close the distance between you and your target and drop a few knuckles on the vagus nerve somewhere in the folds of their gelatinous, Klingon-spouting neck. Hit it precisely and it’s lights out.
