Put A Bullet In Some Nazis And Their Violent, Nazi Dogs

Tired of simply killing only German bipeds? Call of Duty World at War, which hit shelves this week, lets you take the fight to the humans and their dogs. (You can just make out two of the nippers saying their last whatever-the-German-word-for-woof in the above pic.) Take a look at some game video posted after the jump to get a flavor for the headshots that await. It does make me wonder whether or not Treyarch added the “ping” sound if you nail a German Shepherd between the eyes.

Das Interview: Quantum of Solace Producer Stuart Roch

November 10, 2008

Most movie critics pissed on the selection of Daniel Craig before he debuted as the new James Bond. Now console jockeys get a chance to do the same thing to the video game version of Craig with the launch of James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace from Activision. Unlike other first-person shooters on the market, Quantum of Solace has two hurdles to overcome, a track record of sub-par Bond games and the same stigma any licensed game has to shoulder.

Craig silenced all the doubters with a performance that brought a new level of violent reality to what had become almost a fantasy role (Pierce Brosnan couldn’t pull off parkour much less choke a terrorist to death in a stairwell). But the new Bond can’t do any of the heavy lifting when it comes to silencing the video game critics. While Craig threw in a few tips regarding dialogue and gameplay, the guys at Treyarch and Activision have to bring the 007 gaming franchise back from licensed game hell. I caught up with Stuart Roch, executive producer of Quantum of Solace at Activision, to talk about the new title, Daniel Craig’s Guitar Hero habit and his plans to turn the franchise around.

David Suarez Talks COD World At War And Why Dead Nazis Are Good For Sales

October 16, 2008

cod_world_at_war_berlin David Suarez Talks COD World At War And Why Dead Nazis Are Good For Sales
Ach du lieber! If it seems like you can’t point a virtual MG42 without sparking off an invasion of Poland or accidentally winging some poor Kraut in the wiener schnitzel these days, blame game designers. They still haven’t tired of defecating on Hitler’s grave. And who can blame them? Shooting at Hitler (and his minions) equals game sales. The last year alone has brought such gems as Turning Point, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway and Sudden Strike 3 just to name a few, not including My SAT Coach, which actually boasts the tagline, and we quote, “Train tomorrow’s master race!”*

Thankfully for holiday shoppers determined to hang a few Nazi ears from the family tree, Activision will offer an express ticket back to the front when Call of Duty: World at War (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) ships November 11. A chronological step back for the franchise, which made the jump from 1940s-era engagements to contemporary battles in its last iteration to the tune of countless awards and 10 million copies sold, kind of made me wonder “why mess with a good thing?” New additions like Pacific theater setting, four-man online co-op, vehicle-based multiplayer and flamethrower-fueled orgies of destruction aside, how many times can players re-take Iwo Jima before spewing their K-rations? Executive producer Daniel Suarez weighs in to plead the game’s case, and talk drugs, deviant sex, Kraftwerk and more…
* Disclaimer: Not true, but that’s probably what they were thinking.

Infinity Ward Confirms “We Got Next” With Call Of Duty 6

September 15, 2008

callofduty4 Infinity Ward Confirms We Got Next With Call Of Duty 6
The Call of Duty franchise is officially expanding into a cash cow even George Lucas would envy milking. Activision announced today that Infinity Ward would reclaim the reins to the franchise following the release of Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World at War. It’s not such a surprise considering the sphincter-puckering sales of Modern Warfare followed up with the continued online devotion to the game. The alternating studio strategy seems like the best way to fight EA’s slew of annual updates. Only with two studios gamers get some actual variety. COD 6 will hit sometime in 2009.

Call of Duty: World At War will hit shelves on November 11th. Developed by Treyarch studios for ActiBlizzard, the latest sequel promises to deliver more ruthless and wanton killing than ever before. And for all the little would be soldiers bitching about not having tanks online in Call of Duty 4, your pleas have been heard. Online multiplayer will intertwine vehicle and infantry-based missions. Don’t shoot till you hear the word, nein, kamikaze or some Internet tough guy that calls you a douche.

Pre-order your copy of World at War. Think of it is as your personal stand against Hitler.

Call Of Duty 5: Stomping That Last Bit Of Romanticism Out Of Killing Foreigners

June 23, 2008

cod5_waw Call Of Duty 5: Stomping That Last Bit Of Romanticism Out Of Killing Foreigners
Admit it, you’ve watched some old school World War II flicks that left you with the feeling that killing other humans is a great way to pass some time. The Great Escape made solitary confinement look like an exercise in meditation. The Dirty Dozen left you with the feeling that after killing a castle full of Germans you ride off on a half-track with a cooler full of ice cold Budweiser. Lately the tide at romanticizing one of the Earth’s greatest bloodbaths has changed. Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Flags of our Fathers…they have all painted a darker, more realistic picture of the Deuce. Judging by the trailer the latest Call of Duty, World at War, is going to throw the entire contents of the “no bueno” bucket all over the perception of killing off the Axis as a rocking good time. Check the video after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
