What happens when you have 10 million subscribers pumping around $2 billion in revenue back into your company? For starters you don’t have to give a shit that your game’s trailer looks absolutely nothing like the game it’s hyping.

People have a raging hard on for World of Warcraft. Everyone from basement-dwelling Dorito eaters to Mila Kunis is waiting to get their hands on Wrath of the Lich King. I’ve never played World of Warcraft but I can appreciate that any MMO can turn into a serious addiction. And Jeff Kaplan talking about how he slipped Willie Nelson into the game is genius.

But this is bullshit. The Wrath of the Lich King opening cinematic released at Leipzig is gorgeous, brooding and a little on the evil side. It doesn’t really reflect a game that involves side quests like loving woodland animals or riding around on a motorcycle with a sidecar. Does the massive discrepancy between the cinematics and the game bother anyone else?

  3. Do I care? Yes and no. You were right on the money saying that Blizzard doesn’t need to care about producing a really good trailer: Their core market is already playing the game, and they can be virtually certain that Lich King is going to sell a metric ass-ton of copies regardless of the trailers. That being said, it would be nice if the trailer gave the players a general overview of what new things we’re going to have to tackle. One of the biggest problems I, as a first-time WoW player, find is the lack of guidance: The game doesn’t really tell you about the other zones of the game and how to get there, they just assume you’re going to find them eventually. No signs, no directions, and most importantly, no quests!
