The Top Five Mercs To Ever Pop A Cap In Pop Culture
August 29, 2008
Mercenaries 2 World In Flames hits shelves today this Sunday. With it comes the message that killing and destroying for money is not only fun, it’s profitable. Gamers wouldn’t be firing up a sequel to Pandemic’s original Mercenaries if not for the long history of men who kill for money in pop culture. Mercs make for good TV, movies and comic books. There’s something about that flexible morality and a willingness to butcher a perfect stranger in exchange for a certified check that helps you advance a story. In honor of Mercenaries 2, Das Gamer presents the five greatest mercs to ever merc their way through pop culture. Hit the jump to start the list.
#5 Deadpool
The merc known as Deadpool first debuted back in 1990 (New Mutants #98). It’s pretty clear that someone inside Marvel’s editorial (or marketing department) needed a new character and decided to cross Wolverine with Spider-Man. In other words a psychotic with a healing factor that has no problem with assassination that can crack jokes at the same time. Throw in a couple of swords, hand guns and boom, you’ve got Ryan Reynolds’ first and probably last super hero role.
