Why Is The Halo Uprising Comic Mini Series Taking Over A Year To Finish?

halouprising Why Is The Halo Uprising Comic Mini Series Taking Over A Year To Finish?Issue three of Marvel’s four-part Halo Uprising comic by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev hit shelves last week. Normally this would not constitute news. But it’s been nine months since issue two hit stands and nearly a year since the mini-series debuted last September. On top of that, no one is talking about why it’s going to take over a year to punch out four issues.

An email to Bendis got no response. Maleev responded via email but only to say that he could not comment on the current situation. Marvel’s internal PR squad reported that they “we’re not the appropriate parties to comment for this.” Microsoft PR did not respond to emails about the series. Things are getting awful chilly in licensed comic book land.

It’s within the realm of possibilities that production has been slow due to Marvel putting too much of a load on their creative team. But even with the current demand for Bendis scripts and Maleev art it’s unlikely that the creators are the ones holding the show.

Besides, the cover art for the third issue was publicized when the mini-series debuted a year ago. While that doesn’t guarantee that the story and interior art was locked up, it hints at the fact that something was there. And Maleev has a reputation for being on-time. Even with the demands of wrapping up the Civil War story arc, helming Powers with Michael Avon Oeming and prepping for the Secret Invasion it doesn’t make sense that Bendis couldn’t deliver. The guy collaborates with other comic creators on new ideas while playing games of Call of Duty online and took the Halo gig in part just to get in on the Halo 3 beta test.

The implicit stinkfinger seems to point squarely at either Microsoft or Bungie on this one. But all the involved parties are so far sticking to the company line and not releasing any information. The last issue should hit sometime in October. Maybe after the contract has run its course everyone involved can actually answer a question without fear of Steve Ballmer spooning out their spleen. But if it’s this hard to produce 124 pages of comic, getting the rumored Halo movie off the ground has the potential to turn into a triple-A high-speed goatfuck.
